No Re-negotiating 2009 Agreement – ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, yesterday rejected the Federal Government’s new offer of enhanced academic allowances, insisting that government should first implement in full the 2009 agreement before any other negotiation could take place.
National President of ASUU, Dr. Nasir Fagge, who disclosed this to Vanguard, said after consultations with branch chairmen of the union on the new government offer, members rejected it, saying accepting the offer meant starting negotiations afresh.
Dr. Fagge said: “They wanted to make an offer on one of the issues in dispute. They said they are more interested in the earned academic allowances, so they said they want to make an offer just like they did in the first instance.
“We told them that the issue is not making offers on any item in the agreement. The issue is implementing the agreement. We have consulted our principal (branch chairmen) and our principal is of the opinion that the agreement should just be implemented.
“If we say we are going to start talking about offers and rejections and acceptance, it means that we are going back to re-negotiation.
“That is the situation and of course, they asked whether we will still attend tomorrow’s meeting where they will discuss implementation of the needs assessment report, we told them that we will be there.”
The ASUU boss, who said it seemed the Federal Government wanted to reduce the whole agreement to earned academic allowances, said “for us, the agreement has many other things that are very vital for revitalizing university system in this country.”
He said the branch chairmen who were contacted on the development rejected any move that would end up in government abandoning an agreement that was willingly signed and that the union did not want a development where a component of the agreement would be singled out by government.
“They said (branch leaders) that are not interested in re-negotiating the agreement for now, when you implement the agreement then we will talk about re-negotiation,” he said.

Lagos Begins e-ticketing for BRT Buses

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday launched the new electronic ticketing (e-ticket) system for Bus Rapid Transit, BRT, buses in the state.

The e-ticketing system now allows BRT users to pay bus fare as low as N20 within a stipulated distance as against the fixed fare of N70 to N120.

The e-ticketing is being managed by the Lagos Area Metropolitan Transport Authority, LAMATA.

Governor Babatunde Fashola launched the e-ticketing system at the BRT CMS Terminal in Marina, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, saying that the development was to make the transportation system through BRT buses more efficient and fast for both operators and users.

The governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire stated that users of BRT buses with the e-ticket could pay less for travel time as well as make the process of ticketing more users friendly.

According to Fashola, “we have over the years strived to ensure that we have very effective and reliable transportation system on the road, on water and on rail system. From the event of today, what we have done is to make road infrastructure more attractive, more reliable and more efficient for those who chose to use this service, especially those at the grassroots who will make use of this from today.

“It will give users the opportunity to save, instead of paying N120 or N70, you can also buy a week or a month worth on your card depending on your travel time which is more effective and makes the process efficient and fast.”

He said the e-ticketing system was the first of its kind in the country, saying that the government was looking forward to attaining the transportation system obtainable in developed countries.

Managing Director, LAMATA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola said the new system was being developed not just for the BRT buses but also for journeys on ferries and trains subsequently.

He explained that the e-ticketing model was to make it easier for passengers to be able to travel at ease making use of this system as “it is equitable, simple, easier for collection, easy for control of operators, it is attractive to both users also for the administrators as well as the operators.”

I Never Had A GirlFriend – Covenant University’s Best Graduating Student

20-year-old, Michael Eromhonsele sacrificed romance for excellence and emerged the best graduating student of Covenant University in Ota, Ogun State.

Twenty-year-old Eromhonsele Michael was the cynosure of all eyes at the eighth graduation ceremony of the Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, on Friday. He was the best graduating student of the institution. To achieve this feat, he obtained a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.92, out of a possible 5.0, to beat 1,465 other undergraduates.
He says his first few days in the university campus were uneventful. According to him, he was a bit confused because he was not used to the prayer regime that he had to be part of at the faith-based institution. Spirituality is one of the core values of CU. But as soon as he found his rhythm, there was no looking back for him.
He says he did not allow himself to be distracted by his friends or the opposite sex as he concentrated on his studies.
Listing some of the factors that helped him to achieve that feat, he says, “First, I must acknowledge God’s favour and his assistance. Second, I did not entertain any form of distractions. I did not attend parties, and I did not have any girlfriend or what you may refer to as a lover. I concentrated on my studies.”
What about his study style? Eromhonsele reveals that apart from the serene environment in the school, which is conducive for learning, he loves to read late into the night.
According to him, he started reading from 10.00pm and he won’t stop until 1.00am.
“Those are the hours I found most convenient to read. As soon as I closed my book, I went to bed. I woke up at 7.00am, and got ready for my classes. Lectures start at 8.00am,” he adds.
Apart from being the best overall student, he was also the best in the College of Science and Technology where he studied Civil Engineering.
Eromhonsele, who is his parents’ second child, explains that they contributed in no small measure to whatever success he recorded in the university. He stresses that they constantly reminded him of his background and they advised him not to lose focus.
Eromhonsele had his primary school at the University of Benin Staff School, while he attended both University of Benin Demonstration Secondary School and Greater Tomorrow Secondary School for his junior and senior secondary school education.
“My parents were very supportive. They always reminded me of the home I’m from, and they also urged me to take my studies seriously,” he notes.
He explains that his mother, Charity Eromhonsele, is a business woman, while the father, Gabriel Eromhonsele, a civil engineer runs a consulting firm in Benin, Edo State. He says his father is a native of Igueben.
Apart from his parents, Eromhonsele did not lose sight of the contributions of his lecturers, who, he says, impacted him throughout his stay in the institution. Their pieces of advice, he adds, went a long way in shaping his outlook on life.
Talking about the lesson he’s taking away from the CU, Eromhonsele says he’s learnt that “the people one surrounds himself with in life will determine how far one will go.”
Again, he advises that there is no future without God, and that he has learnt to put Him first in everything he does.
After obtaining a first degree, what next for Michael? Beaming with smiles, he says, “I have already got admission to University of Surrey in the United kingdom to read Structural Engineering for my Master’s degree. I chose this particular course because I feel the need to improve on the structural aspects of construction works.”
The eighth convocation event was not all about Michael alone. A total of 1,466 students graduated during the event tagged Release of Eagles 2013. The breakdown showed that 114 made first class, 720 made second class upper, 565 obtained second class lower division, while 67 were in the third class category.
